Wellness Wednesday: Getting Outdoors, Austin Edition
Visits to Austin are always our favorite. Besides being an all-around cool city with its laid-back, but always fashionable, style and culture, innovative, foodie-centric restaurants, and world-famous live music and festival scene- it has the ability to make you want to be healthier.
Whether it’s more your style to go for a jog around the lake, ride your bike to work or find a new place to hike, surrounded by lakes, rivers and parks- Austin has all the necessary pieces for a wellness success story.
Don’t believe us? The city has repeatedly made the list of top 10 fittest cities in the U.S. according to the annual American Fitness Index® (AFI) data reports. The city is populated with a young, highly active community, with super low rates of chronic diseases like asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. Another fun fact: Austin is home to the flagship Whole Foods (located on Sixth St. and Lamar). Any city that birthed one of the most health-conscious, successful grocery store chains knows what they are doing when it comes to bringing health and wellness to their communities.
The list below speaks for itself, but if you need more convincing to get outdoors in Austin, check last week’s blog to learn about the countless benefits of getting outdoors.
Our top Austin picks
1.) Barton Springs
This natural spring-fed pool is a must. With a comfortable, maybe even a little brisk, temperature year round, it’s the best place to cool off during the hot summer months after a hard sweat sesh. Pick up an additional dose of health with refreshments and fare from JuiceLand. (Bonus: There are several locations throughout the city for your convenience.)
2.) The Trail
10 miles of inner-city pathways along Lady Bird Lake, it holds constant as Austin’s most popular recreational attraction.
3.) Zilker Park
The park is home to several recreational opportunities, but most known for the city's best music festivals, including the internationally renowned Austin City Limits. We all love a good outdoor music soiree.
Being from Austin myself, I never knew that days on the lake wake boarding, hiking on the trails and dipping into the springs at Barton Springs pool (even though it's freezin') weren't available in ALL cities and even in all parts of Texas. Now living in Dallas (that also has it's awesome qualities) I make sure to include these amazing experiences into my trips when I go to visit family.
And one of my fave places that is a MUST on my list EVERY TIME I'M THERE IS JUICELAND. Locally owned and operated, I can't tell you how much I love thee! From the juice, to the smoothies, their cleanse program- you just feel healthy walking in the door! My fave drink is Peachy Green! It's more of a smoothie type of drink- a little sweet and healthy, with the perfect combo of citrus! And I'm pretty sure Dallas is on the list for a location SOON! AHHHHH!!!
A late-comer to the Austin bandwagon, I have only recently grown fond of the city. I love everything about it, but I always take time for a visit to Wanderlust Yoga Studio. I make it a priority partly for the yoga, of course, but mostly for the health-conscience cafe located in the studio. I am a sucker for the delicious acai bowls that make me wish I lived in Austin morning. Yoga and a nutrient-dense, tasty bowl is the best way to start your day, in my opinion.
Well, count us in! We may be biased, since yours truly (Sara) once called Austin “home,” but writing this post makes us eager to plan our next trip to the Capital of this great state of Texas.
Be sure to leave us a comment with your favorite ways to get some outdoor time!
Until next time!
